This concert is a Time Out New York Critic's Pick!
St. Paul's Chapel, 209 Broadway, New York, NY. Lecture-Recital, sponsored by Trinity Church Congregational Arts Allegro.
Highlights include Franchomme's Air Irlandais, Varié (with the same tune later sung by Shirley Temple in The Colonel), and his version of Chopin's famous Introduction and Polonaise Brillante (his embellishments to the cello part were approved by Chopin). Also, cellist Katherine Cherbas will join Louise to play cello duo music by Franchomme. Louise will illuminate the music with stories she's unearthed during her research in France. (including some of the research featured in her liner notes for The Franchomme Project album out 9/11 on Delos/Naxos, and her introduction to the Dover publication of Franchomme's out-of-print compositions, appearing in November).
Auguste Franchomme was the most renowned Parisian cellist of his time, a dear friend and frequent performance partner of Chopin, and the dedicatee of Chopin's final work, the Cello Sonata. Their circle of friends included Liszt, Mendelssohn, George Sand, Jane Stirling, the Rothschilds, and many other luminaries of 19th century Paris. Franchomme composed charming, virtuosic cello compositions, most of which are out of print and have never been recorded.
